Breastfeeding Portrait, Monmouth, South Wales.

Becky & Archy

"As a first time mum of my son, now just over a year old i was never nervous about breastfeeding. However feeding in public in the beginning was nerve racking so i bought a nursing apron which didn’t last long as it was more hassle than it was worth.

Since breastfeeding and attending groups talking to others it amazed me how people mostly talk about the negatives and believe me there are negatives! I struggled with sore nipples, nipple thrush and mastitis all in the first two months. After such a tough time i started to dread every feed but with some practice it became easier, enjoyable and part of my daily routine.

Breastfeeding to me is the knowledge that he is getting the best possible start. Its a proud and amazing feeling that i alone can nurture a small human being. The love i feel whilst watching him feed is like nothing I’ve ever felt. Its great to know he has comfort when he’s poorly or closeness when we have mummy time. The special bond i get whilst he plays with my hand or hair during his feed or his excited little hungry noise as we get into position. The above made it all worth it.

I never thought i’d breastfeed past 6 months but here we are and I wouldn’t change it! I am so happy and proud that i stuck at it and i’d do it all over again for my next baby. So much so that after my struggles and the great help received, i decided to train as a volunteer breastfeeding supporter. Now part of the same team that supported me in hope i can help others in return.

To any mum out there who’s pregnant and unsure they want to breastfeed, new mums struggling with pain or the nervousness of feeding in public - please just talk to family, friends, HV or your local breastfeeding support group! You can do it!"
