Maternity photographer South Wales - What time of day is best for a motherhood photoshoot?

If you want to book a maternity photoshoot but find yourself becoming overwhelmed with questions, I’m here to help. I’m going to be answering some of my most asked questions starting with an easy one, What time of day is best for a maternity photoshoot?

The truth is, when it comes to a pregnancy photoshoot in Brecon or anywhere across South Wales, the best time of day isn’t one fixed answer.

It really comes down to one thing: location.

And I promise, once that part feels clear, everything else starts to fall into place so much more easily.

As a motherhood photographer working across places like Abergavenny, Crickhowell, and Brecon, I’ve learned that the landscape guides us. Nature really does hold the session, it tells us when and how to show up.

So when you start thinking about your pregnancy photoshoot in Brecon, I’d always invite you to begin there.

Close your eyes for a second and picture it.

Are you standing near a rushing river, surrounded by trees? Are you on a beach, wind in your hair, waves rolling in behind you?Or maybe you’re up high, somewhere open, with space stretching out in every direction?

That feeling you’re drawn to, that’s your starting point.

If you’re imagining somewhere more sheltered, like deep woodland or near a waterfall (there are so many beautiful hidden spots around Brecon Beacons National Park and just outside Crickhowell), then earlier in the day is usually best.

Around 10–11am works beautifully.

At that time, the sun is high enough to give us plenty of natural light, but because you’re tucked beneath trees or within the landscape, you’re still protected from anything too harsh. The light filters through leaves, reflects off water, and creates this soft, calming atmosphere.

It’s the kind of light where you can just breathe, settle into your body, and not feel like you’re being watched or rushed.

And when you’re pregnant, especially in those later months, that matters more than you might realise.

On the other hand, if your pregnancy photoshoot in Brecon vision leans more towards open spaces—think beaches near The Mumbles, mountain tops, or wide rolling hills—then we want to work with something called golden hour.

This is the hour before sunset, and honestly, it’s as beautiful as everyone says it is.

The light softens, turns warmer, and everything takes on this gentle, golden glow. It wraps around you in a way that feels almost dreamlike. Skin tones look softer, the landscape feels calmer, and there’s this natural stillness that comes with the end of the day.

It’s perfect for those more open, expansive locations where there’s nothing to filter or soften the light earlier on.

I often suggest golden hour sessions for coastal shoots or higher ground across South Wales, where you really want that sense of space and openness to come through.

But here’s the thing I want you to hold onto—there isn’t a “perfect” time in the rigid sense.

There’s only what feels right for you.

Your pregnancy photoshoot in Brecon is about honouring where you are in this moment. And that might look like standing barefoot near a river in the middle of the morning, or it might look like wrapping yourself in layers as the sun sets over the sea.

Both are beautiful.

So when you’re choosing your time of day, don’t worry about getting it “right.”

Think about where you feel most drawn. Think about what kind of environment makes you exhale a little deeper.

We’ll choose the light that supports that.

And I promise, when you look back at these images one day, you won’t be thinking about the time on the clock.

You’ll remember how it felt to be there, carrying your baby, right on the edge of everything changing.
