Family photographer South Wales -What if my child doesn’t cooperate during the session?
If you’ve ever tried to get out of the house with children, shoes missing, snacks everywhere, emotions already running high, you’ll know why this question comes up so often. What if my child doesn’t cooperate during the session? As a family photographer in South Wales of 8 years, and as a mum who’s been raising boys for 9 years, I can tell you… I completely understand. I’ve seen every mood, every personality, every kind of “non-cooperation” you can imagine.
And none of it worries me.
In fact, it’s already part of how I work.

One of the biggest reasons I choose to photograph families outdoors, across places like Brecon, Crickhowell and the wider South Wales landscape, is because nature gives children exactly what they need.
Space.
They can run, explore, shout, climb, or just sit quietly if that’s what they need. There’s no pressure to sit still or behave a certain way like there might be in a studio. The outdoors has this way of either calming children or letting them release all that energy they’ve been holding.
And both are completely welcome.

As a family photographer South Wales, my sessions are always child-led. That means I meet your child exactly where they are that day.
If they arrive feeling shy, unsure, or just needing a bit of time to warm up, that’s absolutely fine. We go gently. No rushing, no forcing. And if they want to stay close to you? Let them.

I know you might have imagined photos of them running freely through fields, laughing into the distance. But if, on the day, they just want to be held, then hold them. Those moments, where they’re tucked into you, seeking comfort and closeness… they’re some of the most beautiful images we can capture. And more than that, it shows them they’re safe. That you’re there.
And often, once they feel that, they find their confidence again. They might wander off, start exploring, and suddenly those “running through the fields” moments happen naturally, just in their own time.

On the other hand, you might have a child who arrives bursting with energy. The kind who’s so excited they can’t hear a word you’re saying.
We work with that too.
I’ll often turn things into games—red light, green light, musical statues, hide and seek. Whatever feels fun and familiar to them. It keeps things playful while gently guiding them into moments where I can capture their personality.
Because that’s what we’re really after. Not perfect behaviour, but who they are.
Over the years, working as a family photographer in South Wales, I’ve picked up a few extra tricks too. Bringing along a favourite book can help create a calm moment. I sometimes set up little scavenger hunts. And I almost always have bubbles tucked away, they work wonders.
Sometimes I’ll even invite your child to “help” me. Let them press the button on my camera, or tell you how to pose. It gives them a sense of control and turns the whole thing into something they’re part of, rather than something happening to them.

And I want to say this part really clearly. Please don’t put pressure on yourself, or on your child, to perform. You don’t need them to behave perfectly. You don’t need everything to go to plan.
You just need to be with them.
These sessions are just a small pocket of time where you get to slow down and be together, exactly as you are.
And I’ll take care of the rest.
If you’re still feeling unsure, we can always talk it through before your session. As a family photographer in South Wales, I’m always happy to plan ahead with you, think about your child’s personality, and put little things in place to help the session feel as smooth as possible.
You’re not in this on your own.

And I promise, even the most “uncooperative” child brings something really special to a session. Sometimes, it’s those very moments you were worried about that end up meaning the most.
Take a look at this Motherhood session, where I used stories of fairies, permission to scream as loud as you can to help guide these girls through a day they’ll never forget.
