Family photographer South Wales - What should my children wear for photos?

If you’re starting to think about booking a session and suddenly realise you also have to dress your children… I see you. Because somehow, choosing outfits for little people can feel harder than dressing yourself, can’t it? As a family photographer in South Wales, this is one of the questions I get asked all the time: what should my children wear for photos?

And honestly, the answer starts with something really simple.

What kind of feeling do you want your photos to have?

Before we even open wardrobes or think about colours, it helps to decide the overall vibe. Are you imagining something more styled and put-together, where everything feels soft and cohesive? Or are you drawn to something more honest and reflective of your everyday life as a family—muddy knees, mismatched socks, and all?

Both are beautiful. Truly.

If you’re leaning towards that more relaxed, “come as you are” feeling, then keep it simple. Choose clothes your children already wear and feel comfortable in. The things they reach for without thinking. The only things I’d gently suggest avoiding are really busy patterns, big logos, slogans, or character prints. They can pull focus away from the connection in the image and sometimes don’t age as well over time.

But beyond that—let them be themselves.

If your little one lives in that slightly-too-small jumper they refuse to part with, or insists on wearing the same dress on repeat… there’s something really lovely about capturing that.

Because this season won’t last forever.

If you’re hoping for something a little more styled, then I always suggest starting with your outfit first. Once you know what you’re wearing, you can build your children’s outfits around that.

Not matching exactly, think complementing.

So if you’re in soft neutrals, you might dress your children in similar tones, or add in gentle colours that sit well alongside yours. Think creams, browns, soft blues, muted pinks. Keeping everything in a similar palette helps create that calm, cohesive feel without it looking too “done.”

As a family photographer in South Wales, I also always think about location when guiding you.

If we’re heading into woodland, lighter tones tend to work beautifully because darker colours can get a little lost in the shadows.

If we’re somewhere more open, fields, coastline or mountain tops, you’ve got a bit more flexibility, but I’d still lean towards softer, muted tones rather than anything too bright.

A few simple things that always help:

Comfort really matters. If your child feels itchy, restricted, or not like themselves, it will show. When they’re comfortable, they relax, and that’s when the magic happens.

Try to avoid distractions. Large logos, cartoon characters, and bold text can take attention away from the moment.

Think about texture and layers. Cardigans, denim jackets, little knits—these add depth and interest without needing bold patterns.

Classic pieces always work. Simple rompers for toddlers, soft dresses, linen trousers, oversized knits… they tend to photograph beautifully and don’t feel dated.

And shoes—keep them simple if you can. Neutral shoes, little boots, or even bare feet if the setting allows. There’s something really natural about that.

But I also want to say this, because it matters just as much as anything else.

You don’t have to get this perfect.

You’re not creating a catalogue. You’re documenting your family.

So if your child insists on wearing something completely unexpected, a rainbow tutu, a superhero cape, wellies on a dry day, I’d encourage you to consider saying yes.

Those are the things that will make you smile the most when you look back.

So dress your children in a way that feels right for your family, take a deep breath, and trust that it will all come together exactly as it’s meant to.
