I first met Alex and Ethan three years ago when I had the honour of helping them welcome their first son, Elijah, into the world. Since then, I’ve had the joy of photographing their family story at different landmarks and capturing the milestones of their lives. So when Alex and Ethan reached out to document this pregnancy, I was thrilled—not only to celebrate the new life on the way, but to continue the story of their beautiful family.

Before I share the session, I want to mention that, in line with my usual practice, I do not share images of children’s faces online. Elijah was with us during this outdoor maternity photoshoot in Cardiff, and while his face won’t appear here, we captured plenty of beautiful images of him embracing his mum’s bump and joining in the celebration of life to come. His curiosity and gentle excitement made the session even more heartwarming.

This pregnancy carried extra weight for Alex and Ethan. Ethan shared with me that Alex had to undergo emergency surgery during this pregnancy—a scary moment for any family. Thankfully, both mother and baby came through safely, earning their little one the affectionate nickname “cookie” for his toughness. Alex also expressed that she wanted to take photos of her bare bump while her surgical scars were still visible, a meaningful tribute to the journey she had been through and a testament to her strength and bravery. Capturing this part of her story was deeply moving and empowering.

To say this family loves nature would be an understatement. Alex, Ethan, and Elijah dedicate much of their time to conservation, environmental education, and exploring the outdoors. They wanted their images to reflect this connection, to show the natural backdrop of life alongside the intimate beauty of pregnancy. This love of the outdoors guided our session and became the heart of the outdoor maternity photoshoot in Cardiff.

During our planning, it was challenging to decide between an indoor or outdoor setting. Alex had a clear vision of a minimalistic white backdrop for her images, but they also wanted nature to be part of the story. So I suggested combining both approaches. We brought my backdrop stand into a woodland area that held special meaning to them, blending the clean simplicity of the studio aesthetic with the organic beauty of the forest. This way, the session felt authentic, intimate, and personal—just like their family.

As we photographed, the moments flowed naturally. Elijah wandered around the wood, sometimes peeking at the camera, sometimes leaning against his mum’s bump. Alex and Ethan shared quiet, tender moments together, showing their love for each other and their growing family. Capturing Alex’s bare bump with her scars visible created incredibly powerful images—honest, unposed, and full of emotion. This outdoor maternity photoshoot in Cardiff was about more than just pretty pictures; it was about telling a real story of courage, connection, and anticipation.

By the end of the session, the combination of minimalist backdrop and natural surroundings had created a beautiful balance. The white fabric contrasted with the earthy tones of the forest, while the gentle light filtered through the trees, enhancing every intimate moment. This approach perfectly reflected Alex and Ethan’s vision: a celebration of life, love, and resilience, framed by the beauty of the natural world they cherish.

An outdoor maternity photoshoot in Cardiff like this is more than a photoshoot—it’s a storytelling experience. It captures the strength of the parents, the anticipation of a new life, and the genuine, loving connection that surrounds a family. Alex, Ethan, and Elijah’s session reminded me why I love what I do: creating images that celebrate life, courage, and the beauty of family in a way that will be treasured for years to come.
